If your perception of heaven orbits around wildlife, especially birds, then Keoladeo National Park is the destination you must head for. Earlier known as Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary, this Park is the most famous destination of India when it comes to birds. It is located in the royal state of Rajasthan housing a variety of birds, both resident and migratory. The endangered Siberian Crane makes the Park its temporary home in the winter season.
The Park boasts of around 350 species of birds. The Park has been recognized as the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Tourists and Ornithologists come to the Park from all over the world. Sprawling over an area of 29 sq km, the Park was created by the Maharaja of Bharatpur as a shooting preserve. The most promising time to visit the Park is from October to February. Some of the migratory birds spotted in the Park are Cranes, Ducks, Pelicans, Eagles, Flycatchers, Shanks,Geese, Wagtails, Hawks, Warblers, Buntings, Stints, Larks and Pipits, etc. The Park also houses mammals like Golden Jackal, Striped Hyaena, Fishing Cat, Jungle Cat, Nilgai, Sambar, Blackbuck and wild Boar.
Tourists can explore the Park on foot, on a cycle or on a rickshaw. The best option is rickshaw which are available on rent. The rickshaw pullers are quite knowledgeable as they have been trained by the park management. Boat ride (in the early morning or late evening) is the other interesting way of exploring the park. Don’t forget to carry your binocular while embarking on your wildlife journey to Keoladeo National Park.
Bharatpur Government Museum, Lohagarh Fort, Bharatpur Palace and Deeg Palace are the nearby attractions, which you can cover during your tour to Keoladeo National Park.
