Mendocino County
One of the main draws of Mendocino County is that it offers different activities for families and individuals alike without excessive prices and crowds found in other travel destinations in Northern California. It is known; however, it is yet to be discovered.
When you visit this town for the first time, the seascape just reaches out and touches your spirit. It’s not just Mendocino – the entire stretch of coastline heading north into Mendocino yields view after view, each a little more spectacular than the last one. Driving this part of Highway 101, you really do have to make an extra effort to focus on your driving, lest you be lulled into some sort of meditative trance.
Jughandle State Reserve features a 2½-mile self-guided nature trail called the Ecological Staircase. Starting by the ocean, this trail goes inland up a series of five ancient terraces formed by waves, glacier, and tectonic activity. Each terrace was uplifted from the sea about 100,000 years after the previous was raised.
Another of the health retreats in Mendocino is the Sweetwater Spa and Inn, located in the town of Mendocino, California. Here, private cottages allow you to have a relaxing and secluded stay, while the rest of the time you can be enjoying Sweetwater Gardens, the resort’s hot tub and sauna spa.
Sonoma County, the land of nature’s delights, can be found in northern California which also happens to be northwestern part of the United States and it is surrounded by the Pacific Ocean on its west with 76 miles of coastline beaches and hydrographic formations such as Bodega Bay as well as the mouths of the Russian and the Gualala Rivers, and with Marin County on its south, Mendocino County on its north, Napa County on its east, Lake County on its northeast, Solano and Contra Costa Counties on its southeast.
More than 30 animals call this special place home, and we were able to enjoy them up close and personal. It is especially great to be able to view them in wide open spaces to observe their fun behavior in a natural setting. It’s not a zoo, rather a private facility dedicated to protecting and breeding endangered animals.
With the first sips the wine was mouth-filling and quite long. The initial meal consisted of slow-cooked beef ribs with sliced potatoes and a side of eggplant roasted with the skin in lots of olive oil and garlic. The wine was very plummy with some tobacco and soft tannins. Its length was fine. The eggplant dish intensified the tobacco taste. When I added a spicy green jalapeno pepper sauce the wine stepped up to meet it.
Esterlina Vineyards lies high above the Anderson Valley. It has spectacular views, making it a perfect spot for a family picnic. Because this winery gets its fruits from five different vineyards, it makes a wide variety of delicious wines. Aside from the local specialties, chardonnay, pinot noir, and Riesling, Esterlina also offers big, chewy cabernets and zinfandels.
If you want to tie in a beautiful Southern California beach with your bed-and-breakfast experience, the Casa Tropicana Inn in San Clemente is the place to go. Situated across the road from a gorgeous beach and San Clemente Pier, Casa Tropicana really couldn’t be in a better location if the main purpose of your getaway is relaxation.
